British Royal Wedding

Like the rest of the world, I was glued to the tv yesterday to watch the live coverage of the royal wedding.  Like everyone else also, I wanted to see what the bride was wearing.  As I know, the European wedding dress is always elaborate and I was sure Kate Middleton was no different.  But I was surprise how simple she looked.  The dress was simple, the hair was simple and she didnt even wear too much make up.  But she did still look radiant and happy.  Maybe its true as what was reported that she is down to earth, and very grounded.  And she didnt have to compete with what her late MIL was wearing.  Such a beautiful girl.  And Prince William looked dashing too.

So congratulations to the royal couple.  Hope you both will have a long and happy life together.  No more hanky panky like what happened to your parents.

And look at that little girl who frowned! LOL...  She is Prince William god daughter who obviously didnt enjoy her self so much.  Maybe the crowds were so noisy for her hehe...

Although I still think our very own Crown Princess, Princess Sarah is still the most beautiful bride and princess in the world.  Just look at her on her wedding day in 2004.  I am sure everyone in Brunei agrees with me :)

How to raise a teenager?

What a difficult question!

I found this interesting article on how to raise a teenager. I like it since in most instances, the article does ring true on the best way to raise a teenager. Typically teenagers are the most difficult person to deal with since they are full of emotions and raging hormones. Its not easy to grow up. It is usually a very delicate situation when dealing with them. From my experience they are such a sensitive creatures and moody, maybe because they have too much to digest, be it in school, boys and their surroundings. They could just stay quiet and be in their room without talking for a long period of time. If they are into music, they could listen to their ipod or iphone for hours. As a mother and who was once a teenager herself, I do understand that they are in a difficult and transitional period in their life.

From a young kid, they are now starting to grow up, starting to realise the whole world in front of them. It can be frightening when they are bombarded with lots of adult issues all of a sudden. They may not know how to react to certain circumstances due to their inexperience nature. This is where a mother role play into place, to support and guide them to life.

Well, I am happy to note that I’ve done most if not all as mentioned in the article. Its not too bad as I would like to think myself as on the right track.

I don’t have the link but here are extracts of the articles in my own words.

Essential rules of parenting : Raising teenagers successfully

Remember Newtons Third Law

Put up with their wimps as long as its not dangerous for them or for the family, and as long as it doesn’t deviate from the teaching of our religion (my own take). This is especially true because the more you try to tell them, the more you push them in the opposite direction. So what you would do if you see them doing something wrong? You can tell them what you think but don’t tell them what to do. And tell them like you are talking to a grown-up.

My own experience

Our daughter can be moody at times. She can just sulk for a few hours and doesn’t say anything when I ask her whats wrong. If this happen, then I would just leave her alone in her room. I know she wants to be left alone, she usually swamped with too many homeworks, she may worry about school or new boy in school? Things like that. I know she will come to me if she needs to talk and I will offer her my advice. That is always the case. From an early age too, I always talk to her like I talk to an adult. I don’t talk using kiddy words or anything.

Dont look under the mattress

Teenagers have so many secrets and they are up to things you don’t want to know about. So don’t even try to look for those things because you wont be able to find it. Better leave it alone and you gonna have a happy teenager at home. If you need to find out, ask them. And don’t scold them.

My own experience

I never go to our daughter’s room and look into her things. I knock on her door when I want to go in and I give her all the privacy that she needs. I don’t have to worry if she hides things from me because I know she doesn’t. She can talk to me about anything. We talk most of the time, I try to be her friend at home and she talks to me about music and artists, she talks about her friends and their boyfriends, she talks to me even about boys.

Running after them doesn’t help anybody

There come a time when they are on their own and can look after themselves. This means they will have to know how to shop, cook, clean and straighten up, do their own washing, pay their bills, etc. Let them learn to do this. Teach them to be independence like ask them to do grocery shopping for example.

My own experience

I am still working on this. I am trying to instill independence nature into our daughter and I hope we are getting there. And I am glad that since our Amah left, my daughter has done a lot of house work. She tidies up her bed, she looks after her pet, cleans her cage, washes the dishes, she takes in the laundry, sweeps the floor. She even cooks 2 dishes already lol. She is doing great. She also starts to go grocery shopping with me or I let her to go and buy things at the kedai once in a while.

Show some respects for things they care about.

Dont criticise your teenagers interests and what they care about. There are cases where this can blow out their own self-confidence. When you criticise their interests thats like you criticise them.

My own experience

I support all her interests, as long as it doesn’t interfere with her studies and her religious obligations. She loves music and likes to play guitar. So we send her for quitar lessons. She is crazy about teen singer, Justin Bieber, so we took her to watch his movie and his concert. I let her buy his CDs, his autobiography, stick his posters in her room. She loves to read and buy books. We take her to the bookstores all the time. And she loves purple! We support that too, she almost have all things purple. She has purple shoes, shirts, bags, school stuff, tudongs, rings, bracelets & bangles, watches, hair pins, even underwears hehehe

Adapt a healthy attitude about sex

Try being confident about the subject. The more your child knows about sex and finds it easy to talk about, they more able they say no (in the event they have boyfriends). You have to show that its perfectly normal to talk about it.

My own experience

Also still working on this since this is a bit delicate in our culture. But I try my best. I am here if she wants to talk about his delicate subject.  Enough said.

Home sweet home

Got back from KL today.  KL was so hot!  Its not an easy task to move about in the heat.  It was so very uncomfortable, and we are from the same area on earth!  I wonder how Justin Bieber felt when he performed last thursday night, he must had nightmares.

Its good to be back home.  Not gonna post more on the trip, I will update details on our holiday blog, go check it out!

We are off...

Off to KL tomorrow for a few days, accompanying our daughter to watch JB concert in Stadium Merdeka.  Hubby and I are bracing ourselves to be amongst the start-struck teenaged girls screaming and shouting during the concert, maybe we should bring ear plugs!

Weekend out and about

You tell me what else is there to do in Brunei during the weekend? Eat right? Hehehe. Although I try to cut down on my portion (dont always successful, I must say) but I love trying out these places.

We visited two restaurants in town with family, which turned out not too bad. Both restaurants were actually introduced by my parents, lol. Yes... they know more restaurants in Brunei than we do and I am so impressed with that. They are the type who likes to spend lunch and dinner outside. Only the two of them which is understandable I think. When you reach certain age and retire, and when the kids grow up and have their own families, they have more time on their hands. And for my mom, to cook dishes for 2 people are so not worth it, so they do go out and eat alot.

First we went to a small Indian restaurant very near to our home called Shahzat Restaurant. This restaurant is so popular it never runs out of customers. You are lucky to get a table straight away, the customers are queuing up for tables, the tables never been empty for more than a few minutes. Most people eat Nasi Briyani here, although there are other usual dishes like the nasi campur being served. My dad likes the nasi briyani too and with that in mind, off we went to get some. We got a table right away, after someone left and too bad, they ran out of nasi briyani! The waitress said to wait for half and hour but we were already hungry so opted for other dishes instead. The owner told us, the briyani is very popular (as if we didn’t know already!), they have cooked about 10 times already on that day, wow! Time to get a bigger “periok”??? lol

Then in the evening, we went to a new restaurant called Aiko Sushi Restaurant & Catering in Kiulap behind the Palm Hotel. Again my dad introduced this to us, and I’ve never been there before. They serve a combination of Japanese and Asean Fusion food, like Shabu-Shabu steamboat and local dishes buffet. The buffet is B$6.00 per person which is reasonable and similar rates to most restaurants which offer buffet in Brunei. We opted for the buffet and it was quite good. I like the ambience too, its airy, comfy with Japanese style atmosphere.

So until next time, lol.

The Indian restaurant which never runs out of customers!

My dad was dissapointed that he didnt get his nasi briyani..

We didnt mind actually.
We arrived at Aiko Sushi restaurant

Samsung Galaxy Tab

After maybe 6 months, I finally bought it.  Get it done and over with.  Its now mine.  I've been thinking alot about it, whether to buy or not.  Hubby recommended it, he said its good and worth buying.  Thought long and hard and yesterday I bought one.  I even blog about here about how I feel and the pros and cons! Oh.. I was wrong in the blog to say, its not a phone, it is a PHONE and a computer!

Now I am getting the hang of it, thanks to hubby who helped me how to use it.  I am not a computer savvy person and not very technical, so I do need someone to help me lol.  So far so good. I am happy.  It is really a beautiful and practical gadget.  Bravo to me!

Some of the features I love are:
  • its size, just nice to fit in my handbag
  • the touch screen, lol.
  • the look, it looks chic and sophisticated, with its leather pouch
  • a combination of handphone, camera, video and I could browse the internet with its wifi.
  • its a 3G where I can use my simcard to browse the internet anywhere.
  • The functionalities, like one touch access to weather, maps, diary, calendar, etc
  • It even can be used as digital frame.
  • And lots more!
And its even cheaper than Ipad 2 or even Ipad 1 with very similar functions and  capabilities.

Me with my new gadget

Looks really nice!

SMSH Award Ceremony

We were invited to attend our daughter award ceremony today at her old school to celebrate and recognise their achievements during their O level exam for 2010.  Our daughter was amongst the recipients to receive certificate and other goodies for their hardwork and for making the school proud.

The ceremony started at around 9.00am, 15 minutes later than planned due to the late arrival of the guest of honour!  But the ceremony went ahead without any problem, all smooth sailing and the event dragged on until about 11.30am.  It was all good fun for my daughter, for her achievements, the recognition and also meeting all her friends who some didnt make it, or has left.

And I always tried to go to any events in the school, afterall its where my daughter strived in her study and because the principal is my good friend from our school days.  It was always a pleasure to see her ;)

This is our daughter's old classmate who went to Japan last year for student exchange programme and missed his exam and now still in Form 5.  He gave his presentation on his experience while in Japan, which was interesting.

One parent were allowed to accompany the award recipient onto the stage.

Justin Bieber - Never Say Never Movie

Ok, today is rather special, not for me, but for my daughter. This is a big deal for her, lol and I just go with the flow.  I accompanied her to watch her big crush, I mean, very big crush - Justin Bieber, the teen singer from Canada (if you didnt know!).  This is his movie, a documentary on how he reached fame, how he becomes famous.  I must admit, I enjoyed it.  I know some of his songs and they are rather catchy so it was good.  I actually like documentaries, like this movie, its fact and its real, its about real people and how people got lucky and become famous, and rich.  Just like this 17 years old kid.  He become this teen sensation due to hardwork from the good people around him, the support he is getting is amazing.  They really did some hard work to push him forward.  Very good footage.  I like the way the movie is taking shape, a young boy from a broken but loving and stable family.  There is his mom, and his grandma and grandpa.  Good family value, so I really like it.

Anyway, my daughter has been waiting for this movie since february, it was launched in the US in february.  And today it was the first day it shown here and she didnt want to miss another day!  So off we go, since she insisted she wanted to see this movie with me (she said she would see it again next time with her friends now, hahaha), I thought it was sweet that she wanted to go with her good old mom, rather than her friends lol.

We arrived at the mall at the 2nd show for the day and as usual the place was crowded.  We were lucky to get good parking and reached the cinema real early.  The cinema was half full, mostly teenagers of course and everyone had a good time I guess.  The movie took about 1hr 45minutes and we were home at around 7.30pm.

Well.. another surprise awaited my daughter, and this is big!  We will watch Justin Bieber concert in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia on 21st April!  Yep.. we will fly to KL next week and watch him live in concert.  My daughter was speechless then she cried then she hugged me then she jumped up and down.  Those moments were precious.  I mean, to watch this kid live?  And I know how much Ayang likes him, you should read her blog

So cant wait for the trip.  Although me and hubby have to brace ourselves to be amongst the crazy and screaming teenagers at the KL stadium next week!

Similarity

Hehe.. i watched the latest session of American Idol and cant help but noticed one of the contestants who looks very much like my nephew, Afizul. I clearly can see the resemblance and it was awesome. Its even more obvious on tv, maybe from picture its a bit difficult to judge.  And maybe to my eyes only but when I asked Ayang, she said the same thing. Every time we watch the show, me and Ayang will say something like, oohh.. this is how Edun (what we called him at home) will look like when he grows up. We both laugh a lot when American Idol come about on tv and look forward to see ‘the adult’ Edun performs on tv lol. Edun can be quite active, he is so cute, very friendly but can be so whiny in a cute way. He can speak some English at 4 years old, all he does is watch tv and follow what the tv says. And loves to play an Ipad and can be engrossed on it for hours. Thats our Edun!

Both of them really have that same big black eyes and hair style. Amazing!

So judge by yourself!

A visit to Kayu Nasi Kandar

We thought we wanted to visit this restaurant after the renovation, expecting some sort of improvements to the menu and the ambience of the restaurant itself.  Well.. for me it still looks the same lol.  Except the ceiling where there are now downlights and some colours, pictures on the wall.  But I guess they wanted to maintain the concept so they prefer to stick to the original.  The only noticable difference was the food location, where it is now at the centre rather than near the door, and some lights added to it.  And the restaurant has a closed door concept now, whereas before it was kind of open and it got noisy at times since it was located around the same area where bikers hung about with their roaring motorcycle engines.  And with the closed door, we noticed it was less noisy since the door managed to keep the noise out.  And thats a good point!

I think the menu is also the same, except according to the waiter, they have nasi padang now.  Dont know what difference that make.  But I still love the tea tarik special, you know, the one with the gula anau. Its still heavenly.

The restaurant was just opened that morning and the staff were still busy tidying up the place, maybe there was a launching or something.  We dropped by there in the afternoon and ate some murtabak and the teh tarik special.  And listen to this people!  There will be 10% discount if you dine it (food only) until end of the month.  So dont miss the opportunity!
