New prepaid meter in Brunei

Hubby wanted to see a small exhibition/roadshow at the mall about the newly introduced prepaid meter electricity for Brunei next year. I think alot of people still don’t understand how the meter will work or how the payment are to be made, especially for those who have the normal post meter ones, including us. Our knowledge of this new system is so patchy that we need proper guidance and information in order for us to fully understand the new system, how it works and how it will affect us, come 1st Jan 2012. Can be so confusing especially now we know the charges will go up or down depending on our current consumptions. There were  news about it but still not easy to understand.

So we were hoping this visit to the mall will shade show lights on how we gonna pay our electricity bill next year.

We are not that worried lah about the tariff. We don’t usually use too much electricity per month since there are only 3 of us and we don’t spend too much time at home except on weekends. And you all should meet my daughter.  She is the most environmentally conscious teenager in the whole wide world!  Like, she never switch on her aircon during the day, no matter how hot the weather is!  She only open the water tabs unless its absolutely necessary.  Never use plastic bags, and so on.  And she wants to become an environmetalist one day, lol.

Well.. the concerns are more to those who are big families and lots of usage on electrical appliances. In a nutshell, if you spend around B$100 per month then your new tariff next year will be around $200? Wow.. thats alot.

I must agree that its about time Brunei government look into this matter more closely.  Its a good initiative to reduce energy by hacking up the tariff dont you think?  If all these time we switch on our aircons 24/7 (not one aircon but maybe 3-4 aircons pe household?) imagine what that will cost us?  If the tariff becomes more expensive, then we wont do that anymore, we will switch off all aircon or just live with one aircon only.  Good right?  And the government even more willing to give the new prepair meter free of charge.  But the issue is how long will this take?  There are hundred thousands houses in Brunei.  3 years?  5 years?  That yet to be seen.

The road show at the Mall

I like this interactive tv screen where it showed a sample of one house with lists of appliances scattered around the house and you could pick and choose how many aircons, tvs, radio, fridge you typically use every day.  Then it will show roughly the new tariff of the appliances you use.

A lady from the Electrical Dept showed how the tv screen worked to some people at the Mall.

Hubby was in depth conversation with one of the officer from the Electrical Dept.
