Lets talk about FATS!

I love cooking. Being a mom I always try to look for new recipe for my family. Its rather boring to have same dishes every day. So I opt for variety and diversion. Last night I cooked lamb chop with mash potatoes and stuffed eggs, and yellow watermelon for dessert. Yum... my hubby and daughter love them.

My lamb chop is a hit and I didn’t even use any oil. No oil at all, they were grilled. I realise one thing though, its so much easy to do western dishes compared to our local ones. And I also realise western dishes require less oil whilst our local delicacies are not delicious without oil, huhu. Oily food is so not healthy. But nevertheless, I still cook with oil, cant help it, its part of our daily consumption I must say. And mash potatoes do require some butter which is fat of course but I go with the fact that moderation is important. And my family is important. I am responsible for what I serve on the dinner table. If I do cook with oil, I opted for unsaturated oil these days. I am becoming more concern of health and healthy living so I try my best to go for unsaturated oil for a change. And I must remind myself I should start exercising again!

Saturated fat can go havoc on your blood cholesterol level, and mine is already on a higher side which could be quiet scary. Its definitely not easy to stay healthy unfortunately so I try to do what I can and not to worsen the situation. Although it can be hard at times, we have lunch outside every single day and its not easy to control what you eat, sigh...............

Well, here are some explanation on these fats and oils. Worth reading....

Saturated fat
Saturated fat is the main dietary cause of high blood cholesterol. Saturated fat is found mostly in foods from animals and some plants. Foods from animals include beef, beef fat, veal, lamb, poultry fat, butter, cream, milk, cheeses and other dairy products made from whole and 2 percent milk. Foods from plants that contain saturated fat include coconut, coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil (often called tropical oils), and cocoa butter.
So not all saturated fat are from animals, some come from plants as well. Therefore, must use polyunsatured and monounsaturated fats as much as possible.

Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats
Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are the two unsaturated fats. They're found mainly in many fish, nuts, seeds and oils from plants. Some examples of foods that contain these fats include salmon, trout, herring, avocados, olives, walnuts and liquid vegetable oils such as soybean, corn, safflower, canola, olive and sunflower.

So for cooking better use oils from plants such as Corn (this is what I am using for cooking for now) or sunflower or olive oil and not from palm or coconut which is saturated fat. I notice most cooking oils in Brunei are palm and coconut oil from Malaysia. And these oils are saturated fat! What is awesome about the corn or sunflower oil is that this oil may help lower your blood cholesterol level when you use them in place of saturated and trans fats.

Although I must say these oils are much more expensive than the palm or coconut oil so I sense that its not easy for people to buy these oils which is such a pity.

Apart from using sensibly on the cooking oils, I am also interested to mention below tips recommended by the American Heart Association. Very useful tips!

Choose a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole-grain, high-fiber foods, and fat-free and low-fat dairy most often.

Keep total fat intake between 25 and 35 percent of calories, with most fats coming from sources of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as fish, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils most often.

Use naturally occurring, unhydrogenated vegetable oils such as canola, safflower, sunflower or olive oil most often.

Look for processed foods made with unhydrogenated oil rather than partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated vegetable oils or saturated fat.

Use soft margarine as a substitute for butter, and choose soft margarines (liquid or tub varieties) over harder stick forms. Look for ”0 g trans fat” on the Nutrition Facts label.

French fries, doughnuts, cookies, crackers, muffins, pies and cakes are examples of foods that are high in trans fat. Don't eat them often.

Limit commercially fried foods and baked goods made with shortening or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Not only are these foods very high in fat, but that fat is also likely to be very hydrogenated, meaning a lot of trans fat.

Limited fried fast food. Commercial shortening and deep-frying fats will continue to be made by hydrogenation and will contain saturated fat and trans fat.

Better safe than sorry guys!

Street Photos

Hubby went for a photography workshop yesterday which was organised by Hanisham.com. And he came home with lots of lovely and amazing photos last night. The group went on to the Kianggeh Market at Bandar and the surrounding areas. I think they did fantastically and I was impressed with the result.

Cancer screening at JPMC

Hubby and I decided to go for this test, a drive done by JPMC to fight the disease. In Brunei, cancer is the leading cause of death therefore the Jerudong Park Medical Centre Sdn Bhd (JPMC) has launched this campaign ‘Prevention is Better Than Cure’ to address this issue. Also in conjuction with Brunei 25th National Day, the hospital offered a very attractive price which we cannot dismiss.

I've always wanted to do this test. As far as I know about 30% to 40% of diagnosed cancers could have been prevented. Although some people choose to be ignorant but at best we need to look after ourselves. Who else gonna do that if we dont do it for ourselves? We are living in such a polluted society, our environment is tarnished with lots of toxic therefore I think we need to do the prevention early. I always shudder when I heard people having cancer, its such a dreaded disease, its like a death sentences. Especially for those who detected their cancer so late. Its such a pity, some of those people left so early and so young. And some are mothers, leaving their husbands and children behind. Its so sad.

I have a few friends who had cancer and they are survivors but their journey were never easy. I am still following some blogs from cancer survivors too, so this subject is really close to my heart. It makes me think how vulnerable life can be.
So we signed up for this promotion which will end 31st March and we can redeemed or go for the test before 31st May 2010.

I am going for Female Screening package which cost me B$248 only, whereby the original price was B$425. The test are for:
AFP - to check the liver
CA153 - to check the breast
CA199 - to check the colon
CA125 - to check the ovary
CEA - to check the colo-rectum
Chest X-ray - to check the lungs
Pelvic Ultra sound - to check the cervic, ovaries and uterus
Pap smear - to check the cervice
Plus, specialist consultation twice.

Hubby opted for Male cancer screening which cost him B$218 which original price was B$350. And the test will be:
AFP - to check the liver
CA199 - to check the colon
CEA - to check the colo-rectum
PSA - to check the Prostate
Chest X-ray - to check the lungs
Abdominal ultrasound - to check the stomach, liver and pancreas
Plus, specialist consultation twice.

We havent decided when to go for the test yet but will definitely do it soon.

Me and my lobster

Today hubby is treating me and our daughter for a lobster extravaganza at our favourite restaurant, Excapade Sushi in Kiulap. I used to be a novice in eating lobster, and I must say I am not an adventerous eater. But this is the thing of the past. I love lobster now. We had some while we were in Kuching and now hubby is treating me with it again. And it was really delicious, yummy. It was a very filling lunch, we ate lots of seafood, lobster amongst other dishes as you can see below.

Girls' Day Out

I love shopping! And I love it even more when I did it with my daughter, LOL. I took the day off and instead of resting at home and took things easy, I went out for a few hours with my daughter and had a blast at shopping mall, hahaha. We were supposed to go to the Bank only today but ended up having so much fun doing some shopping. I always cherish this moment. We were like good friends, shared lots of laugh, tried things out and looked at the same things.

We ended up buying a few clothes. All in purple colours, her favourite. And we also bought a few materials for Baju Kurong (our traditional dresses), some school materials and the Percy Jackson DVD . All I can say its been a lovely day.

Almost 60 and still working?

Just need to record this. Our retirement age is now moved up to 60! In conjunction with the recent government ruling of new SCP scheme. A few years ago, the retirement age for females in our company was 50, then it was changed with a new twist. We (female employees) can retire either at 50 or 55. We were allowed to choose whether to go on working until 55 or opted for 50 to retire. Sounded good. Some of my collegues chose the latter, considering we need to look into other areas of our life that need to be addressed. We realised life is not only for working and obtaining the worldly possessions. We must also remember the afterlife and our preparations for that journey. Spend more time at home and do all our religious duties, thats the idea. All were said and done and taken care of.

But then came this new law and unfortunately the law superseded the older law. Now EVERYONE has to retired at 60! No more choices.

I must admit that I have some concerns about this. For a woman like me and who has to travel to work every day. 3 hrs per day in total on the road can really upset my body and soul. Its just so tiring and I am not even 60 yet! Imagine I still have to do this way beyond 50 years old. How would I be like then? Could I still afford to drive to work if hubby not around? Would I still be able to think sharply and handle all the work matters which sometimes can be very challenging? Could I still remember names and work procedures and processes? Would I need canes or even wheel chairs to reach my office? Hahaha.

Well, maybe I am too hard on myself. Maybe I will be ok and still look good at 60. Maybe my mind is still as sharp as a knife, who knows?? But the possibility is still there I might be too old to work until 60.

I know my mom worked as a teacher until she was 55. She was alright still healthy and active at 55. So maybe it can be done. If I take good care of my self, keep healthy, eat right and exercise. Maybe I can. Or maybe I cannot. It is really a tough decision whether to carry on or not.

But I really like the idea of staying home more. Especially at this age and beyond. I feel its time for me to slow down a bit on the work front. Afterall I’ve been working for 20 years of my life and I guess its a good time to look at other areas of my life. And spend my older days doing all the religious duties as a muslim, doing all the good deeds, all the amalan and think of the afterlife more. I wish I could stop thinking about going to work and be in the office on time every day.

As good as it gets.

We were treated for a big “makan” at the office yesterday to celebrate what we have done well in 2009. A big scrumptious food laid out at the shaded management carpark for everyone in the company to enjoy. Well, there are around 1500 of us at the head office so there were lots of food and other dishes. A big brunch (well, its done at around 10am in the morning) for the whole company around Seria, not only at the head office but in about 10 company locations, so that’s a first.

Earlier, the MD announced how well the company has performed for the past year and what rewards are waiting for us. Smile.. Smile… It took us more than half an hour to find out, lol. (The macbook now lingering in my mind hahaha) Then it was announced. No problem there. But I must mentioned that its going a bit down for the past 3 years though, but whatever it is, we all know in this economy businesses can be tough. I don’t want to be the ungrateful one, because the money spent for the bonuses must be very staggering. I know we were the lucky ones who got this compared to the rest of the other workforce so we were very grateful.

Alhamdulilah.

MacBook Pro

Busy weekend as usual. Attended my cousin’s daughter wedding invitation. The weather was really hot and so humid we were all drenched with sweat! Not a pleasant feeling indeed but happy for the couple. They looked lovely together. Nothing could beat that glow of newlyweds, smile all the way.

After the wedding, hubby and I went on to buy a new lappy, now he chose the MacBook Pro from Apple. Hubby needs one because his Dell broke and corrupted a few days ago and I know he couldn’t live without a laptop so that’s basically the reason why we need a new one. And I was so sakai!!!!!!… Macbook Pro is not new in the market but I went ga-ga when I saw it. I fell in love with it right there and then. It is rather expensive though, for me anyway, more than B$2000 but the lappy looked so sleek and sophisticated. I feel like I want to own one too. We spent a few hours trying out all the cool features lol.

First of all, registration for the Apple, hubby did it all on his own being the computer technie that he was, it went smooth, we then tried all the cool features. Amazing how we could use two fingers and four fingers to maneuver the screen. They have this so-called Air's touchpad which incorporates the multi-touch capability introduced on the iPhone, which enables scrolling, zooming and rotating to be activated with multiple finger gestures. I have something new to learn tonight. Totally different from Windows and totally awesome. And I love the key pads too, they lit up in the dark with their LED backlit features. You could just sit in the dark and type since you would be able to see the keypads since lights came out of each of them. Isnt that cool. And its so slim too.

So I am toying with the idea of buying one. But the question is, is it wise for me to buy one too? Since hubby got one, why do I need another one? Its more to “What I want” and not “What I need”. Totally different. I don’t desperately need a new lappy though. I have my desktop at home and in the office. Our daughter got her Acer. So why do I need another one? But the Apple looked very nice and no harm for me to buy also. This is tough, and I need to decide soon lol.

The Biggest Loser Asia

Today’s going to be a long day for me. Havent got enough sleep and feeling really tired after the late night last night. Its all because “The Biggest Loser Asia” which was aired one hour late due to technical issues, as they said. Its a working week for me and had to wake up early the next day but I have been following this show from the very beginning so I am not going to give up now and go to sleep and miss the finale lol.

But what an amazing show. Thos guys who competed in the finale were really awesome, envy them so much. Their transformations right infront of my eyes were truly amazing. And they looked great too. Well.. except for David Gurnani maybe.

He is the winner. He lost a whopping total of 83kg from his 157kg frame. That’s more than half of his body weight! And come to think of it, 83kg is more than my own weight, so that’s a lot of kg to lose. And when I looked at him last night, I was really shocked. He looked older and not a picture of health. Is he pushing himself too much? I hope he is doing fine with all the weight lost he had.

But Martha looked really cute. This young girl from Hong Kong was always the underdog who lost very little compared to the rest of the finalists. She got her big break when she won the immunity competition last week and made her eligible to be in the final. But she did look cute though now.

And Carlo is the 1st runner up and always in the shadow of David. he never got to pass over David in terms of weight lost but he was really lucky to be picked up in the first place. He was not even in the first line up but was chosen to replace someone who had to bow out. He lost 49kg and looked different from his old self too. The last finalist was a Malaysian named Aaron. Aaron lost 60kg from his 159kg frame and he looked great too but not really that obvious in term of the shrinking compared to David and Carlo.

Wow.. I wish I could lose that amount of weight, man. Just imagine in just 6 months you could reach the body of your dream. Its wonderful. But I know its all through very hard work, dedication and determination. Losing all those weight was not an easy task for anybody. They were really working their ass of! And had to lost 6,000 to 7,000 calories per day which was really really hard. So bravo to all of them. They are all winners in my eyes! I am fighting to lose weight as well so this show is close to my heart. Very inspirational.

Anyway some pictures I found in the internet from last night.

This is Carlo from the Philippines who is the 1st runner up.

And this is Martha from Hong Kong, the only girl in the final who really looked so pretty now.

These are the transformation pictures from David and Carlo. The "Before" and "After" pictures. See what they looked like and the difference they make. Awesome!

Wake up call

I need to watch out on my diet. I went for my annual medical check up yesterday and found out my sugar level was elevated. That’s a big wake up call, just don’t want end up being a diabetic. It was ok last year, around 5 which is really good, but I have no idea what trigger it this time. Could it be I drank too many sweet drinks, more chocolate than usual? Emm.. I thought I didn’t really consumed too much sugar and I eat even less rice. I have geared up and eat more green vegetables these days but it didn’t show in the blood test. So WTF??? I guess its the age thing and your body starts to betray you. Which is not nice and how could you get your body to cooperate??

But come to think of it, it really kind of normal to me though. What I mean by this is that whenever I try to do something positive to improve something in my life, it always happen the other way around. I had similar mishaps last year when we tried to do that thing, I ended up not doing it although I have tried everything in my power to improve our odds.

We have history of diabetic. My mom is one and I know in Brunei this is number one ailment of most people. But I don’t feel like I want to be in the statistic. So what am I gonna do? More strict diet perhaps?

Intelligent Traffic Lights?

You get the gist?

I am talking about the traffic lights on Brunei roads. They have their own brains. We noticed this for a while already.

Ever pay attention on how the light works? Do you notice them or you just ignore them when driving? I know some people will just wait until the red light turns green and go. Why should you pay any attention to the lights whilst there are other things around you to see or other interesting things to think about? Right? Wrong!

I give you an example. Say along Jerudong/Mulaut 3 way junctions. If you look at them carefully, you will notice that the green light will stay green when there are cars passing by and no other cars on the opposite side or on the left side. If there are cars on the opposite side then of course, it will work normally according to the pre-set seconds it has to light up. If on the 3 junctions road, only 2 junctions have cars occupying the area then the 3rd junction will have a red light all along until a new arrival cars arrives on that junction. This happens to every traffic lights in Brunei, I think.

I noticed when there was no car on my left then I can go straight right away but when there is a car suddenly arrives, then the traffic light will turn red right away as if it knows of the arrival on my left. Genius right? Or I am the only one who find this interesting? Lol.

We keep this in mind when we travel and see if the other country's traffic lights do the same. No... they dont. So whats so special about Brunei traffic light?
